What a great time of year easter is, spring coming in and the promise of better times to come. Sadly the weather can’t always be relied on in the UK, that’s why so many people head out to Tenerife for the sunshine. Easter week is also a very important holiday on the Canarian calendar so bumper crowds are expected at the holiday hot spots.

One alternative is to try the north of Tenerife, still great weather but a little cooler and with a wealth of green etched into the rocky landscape. This year an amazing 21,000 passengers will visit the capital, Santa Cruz on luxury cruise liners. For them it is a fleeting visit but maybe enough to tempt them back in future months.

Further west along the north coast Puerto de la Cruz will be less crowded but bursting with tradition. Parades, flowers and church services will remind everyone of the true meaning of easter. Hotel las Aguilas is a great base for a northern visit, now or at any time of the year, close to Puerto de la Cruz, it also opens up the doorway to the pine forests and walking trails that are so popular in the top half of the island.

Disabled and poor mobility citizens and visitors will find plenty of ramps, low kerbs, reserved parking and plenty of specialist advice from cultural and information centres in the municipality. Las Vistas beach, the biggest of all Arona’s bathing areas is particularly proud of its changing cubicles, wooden walkways to the shore and staff assisted bathing chairs to make sure that anyone can enjoy the refreshing sea water.

The award scours the whole of Spain to find worthy entrants, they need to be in a population of between 10,001 and 100,000 habitants. Whether it’s winter sun or summer fun, Tenerife is holding its own in an increasingly competitive market. In uncertain times people go for the tried and trusted, Tenerife always offers great beaches, a friendly welcome, and good value. The popularity of Tenerife flights also reflects the large amount of people that have invested in Tenerife property.

Once you have bought a home in Tenerife, the wide availability of late cheap flights means there is always an escape route from the winter blues in the UK.

The capital Santa Cruz, in the north, kicks it all off in February before the fever spreads from town to town, complete with loud music, equally loud clothes, and lots of dancing. You don’t need an invite, the more the merrier, just bring your enthusiasm, and if possible a colourful outfit – well you wouldn’t want to look silly.

Los Cristianos is the biggest of the Carnaval celebrations in the southern tourism hot spots, this year it starts on Friday 4 March with live music late into the night. Saturday sees the Carnaval Queen elected amid much pomp and colour, and then Sunday afternoon is the big parade through the streets of Los Cristianos, from the beach near Guaza mountain up to the Cultural Centre in the heart of the town.

Monday night it all draws to a close with the sardine funeral, don’t be sad it’s a riotous affair with a giant papier mache sardine carried through the streets to meet its end in a blaze of flames and fireworks at the beach. Mourners dressed in black weep and wail, only to leap up and dance as the procession continues. A definite highlight of the social calendar.
